The other 8 immigrants from Italy arrive in Shengjin!
An Italian navy ship docked in the Albanian port of Shengjin on Friday with eight migrants, a month after an earlier group was denied entry after a failed vetting process.
The group will undergo the asylum process before being transferred to the repatriation center in Gjadër.
It is only the second transfer of migrants since the two migrant processing centers began operating in October.
The same ship of the Italian navy previously transferred the first 16 immigrants from Bangladesh and Egypt to Albania. Four of them, identified as minors or individuals with health problems, returned to Italy on the same day.
Twelve others returned three days later, following a ruling by Rome judges who refused to detain them because their countries of origin, Bangladesh and Egypt, were not safe enough to return to.
The court ruling had shortened the list of countries considered "safe" by law, meaning Rome could repatriate migrants from those countries who did not gain asylum using a fast-track procedure.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized the decision and said that considering countries like Bangladesh and Egypt unsafe would mean that virtually all migrants would be barred from Albania's program, rendering it ineffective.
The number of people arriving in Italy along the central Mediterranean migration route - mainly from Bangladesh, Syria, Tunisia and Egypt - has fallen by 60% in 2024 compared to 2023. As of November 7, according to the Italian Interior Ministry, 57,767 migrants have arrived from the sea in 2024.
