Starline 21, the railway connecting 39 European destinations - From the United

Dozens of rail lines launched in recent years are making it easier to travel across European borders. But a newly announced proposal from a Copenhagen-based institute, recently reported on by Euronews, has a much more ambitious plan for the continent's rail connections.

Called Starline 21, the project envisions a high-speed rail network across Europe, hoping to reinvent the continent's "fragmented, uneven, often slow" rail infrastructure. "A truly integrated rail system is no longer just a matter of convenience; it is a strategic imperative for Europe's sustainability in the 21st century," the expert group stresses.

“Designed as a metro system, [Starline] changes the way Europeans perceive their continent - not as a collection of distant capitals, but as a single, fast-moving network, where every connection, whether for people or goods, is easy to reach. Starline 21 aims to have the network operational by 2040. The 21st Century Europe network is designed to be 22,000 kilometers long and plans to connect 39 destinations in European countries, from the United Kingdom to Turkey and Ukraine. Tirana is also planned to be part of this network.

Europe is currently running the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), a European Union initiative that aims to unify infrastructure across the continent. The new system will be around 30 percent faster than current road and rail travel. It is designed for speeds of 300-400 km/h.

Transport is one of Europe's biggest climate challenges. According to the European Environment Agency, in 2022, the sector contributed around 29 percent of the EU's total greenhouse gas emissions.
