A year of sports - Albania secures the "play-off" for the World Cup
With a minimal 0-1 victory over Andorra, Albania secured the "play off" phase of the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the USA, Canada and Mexico, for the first time in history. Serbia's loss to England ensured that our national team mathematically secured second place in the group. But, before going to the World Cup, Albania still has two obstacles to overcome. The numbers in the draw that was made in Zurich determined that our national team will face Poland in the first match, a match that will take place on March 26. In case of victory, the Albanian national team will face the winner of the Ukraine - Sweden match in the final. In this case too, Albania will play the match away from home, while the match will take place on March 31.
Poland is a familiar opponent for our national team, as it has faced this team many times in the last qualifiers. The last match with Poland was on September 10, 2023, where the Rossoneri won at the "Air Albania" stadium with a score of 2-0, with goals scored by Asani and Daku.
If they qualify, the draw in Washington has determined that Albania will be part of Group F, along with strong teams such as the Netherlands, Japan, and Tunisia. The World Cup will start on June 11 and Albania will hope to be one of the teams competing for football's biggest title.

After losing the 2020 final to Bayern Munich, Luis Enrique's team, which this season risked elimination in the league stage, finally won the trophy that the Qatari owners, with their staggering investments, had wanted for years.
Tottenham Hotspur wins the Europa League

Jannik Sinner wins Wimbledon men's title, Iga Swiatek wins women's title
Jannik Sinner defeated Carlos Alcaraz 4-6 6-4 6-4 6-4 in an intense final to win his first Wimbledon title and fourth Grand Slam of his career, avenging his dramatic French Open final defeat. With this victory over the two-time champion, Sinner became the first Italian to win the Wimbledon title.
Iga Swiatek completely dominated the women's final, defeating American Amanda Anisimova 6-0 6-0 to become the first Pole to win Wimbledon.
The final, which lasted just 57 minutes, was historic: Anisimova became the first player to lose 6-0 6-0 in a Wimbledon final since 1911. Swiatek, winner of four French Open titles, had never advanced beyond the quarterfinals at Wimbledon before, but now adds a sixth Grand Slam to her career.
Formula 1
McLaren's Lando Norris won his first Formula One world championship and ended Max Verstappen's four-year dominance with a thrilling third place in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Verstappen, who has won more races than any other driver this season, triumphed in the final race of the year, with McLaren's Oscar Piastri coming in second. Norris, who became the 11th British champion in Formula 1 history, finished the season with 423 points, ahead of Verstappen on 421 and Piastri on 410.
McLaren, which secured the constructors' title in October for the second consecutive year, won both the drivers' and constructors' titles in the same season for the first time since 1998.
World Rally Championship
Toyota's Frenchman Sebastien Ogier secured his ninth world Rally title in Saudi Arabia, equalling the record of his compatriot, Sebastien Loeb, and becoming the oldest champion in the history of the sport, at the age of 41.
Ogier won six consecutive titles between 2013 and 2018 and added two more in 2020 and 2021. He has achieved success with three different manufacturers, Volkswagen, Ford and Toyota.
Ogier had announced his intention to retire from full-time participation at the end of 2021, but continued to compete on a partial schedule and won the last title despite missing three of the 14 races, winning six of them.
The Frenchman, who turns 42 on December 17, is now the oldest driver to win the world championship. The previous record was held by Finn Hannu Mikkola, who won the title in 1983 at the age of 41 years and 183 days.
Moto GP
Ducati's Marc Marquez secured his seventh MotoGP title at the Japanese Grand Prix, his first since 2019, taking an elusive lead in the world rankings with five races remaining.
Marquez needed to win over his brother and title contender, Alex of Gresini Racing, by at least three points, and finished second to Italian Francesco Bagnaia to secure the title.
After crossing the finish line, Marquez placed his hands above his head and when he realized the magnitude of the achievement, the Spaniard burst into joy.
Tour de France
Tadej Pogačar secured his fourth Tour de France title, consolidating his status as the most dominant cyclist of his generation and equalling Briton Chris Froome on the all-time list of winners. The 26-year-old Slovenian, winner in 2020, 2021 and 2024, produced a near-perfect performance, coming very close to victory on the final stage on the Champs-Élysées after an epic duel with Belgian Wout van Aert.
The world champion practically sealed his victory in the Pyrenees, on the climb to Hautacam, leaving behind main rival Jonas Vingegaard, more than four minutes.
Pogačar equaled Froome's record and now follows cycling legends Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Jacques Anquetil and Miguel Indurain, who share the record with five titles.
World Athletics Championships
A record number of nations won medals at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, with a total of 53 countries finishing on the medal table at the 20th edition. The previous record of 46 countries was set in Osaka in 2007 and equalled in Budapest two years ago. Samoa, Saint Lucia and Uruguay won their first medals in World Championships history.
Mondo Duplantis broke the world record with a leap of 6.30m on his third attempt, securing his third consecutive title. The gold medal was already assured for the American-born Swede when he lifted the bar a centimetre above the previous record of 6.29m set in Budapest.
Noah Lyles of the United States won his fourth consecutive medal in the men's 200 meters, triumphing in 19.52 seconds ahead of his compatriot Kenny Bednarek (19.58 seconds). Bryan Levell took bronze in a personal best of 19.64.
Melissa Jefferson-Wooden became the fourth woman to complete a sprint double at the world championships, winning the women's 200m final in the fastest time of the year, 21.68 seconds, ahead of Britain's Amy Hunt. Bronze went to two-time defending champion Shericka Jackson of Jamaica in 22.18 seconds.
In the women's 5,000-meter final, Kenya's Beatrice Chebet defeated Faith Kipyegon in the sprint, winning the world title and completing the "double" in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters.
Maria Perez of Spain won her second gold medal at the World Championships in the women's 20km race. Perez, who defended her 35km title earlier in the championships, finished in 1:25:54, 12 seconds ahead of Mexico's Alegna Gonzalez.
NFL – Super Bowl
The Philadelphia Eagles destroyed Kansas City's bid to become the first NFL team to win three consecutive Super Bowls with a convincing 40-22 victory in New Orleans.
The Eagles' defense was outstanding, neutralizing Kansas' creative mastermind Patrick Mahomes, while on offense, their quarterback Jalen Hurts led the team, passing for two touchdowns and avenging the 2023 loss.
This big victory brought the Eagles their second Super Bowl title in history, following their victory in 2018.
Basketball – NBA
The Oklahoma City Thunder capped off an incredible season by defeating the Indiana Pacers 103-91 in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, winning the team's first title since moving from Seattle in 2008.
The league's best player, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, led the team at Oklahoma City's Paycom Center, scoring 29 points and 12 assists.
He was also named the Finals MVP, marking the first time since Shaquille O'Neal in 2002 that the same player had won the Finals MVP and Finals MVP awards.
This title capped an outstanding season for the Oklahoma Thunder, who finished the regular season with a 68-14 record.
