From "Are you dead?" to Demumu - The Chinese app that cares for people

The Chinese mobile app "Are You Dead?", designed for people living alone to notify loved ones when there has been no activity for days, has announced it will change its name following its global success.

The app, known in Mandarin as "Sileme" ("Are you dead?"), topped Apple's App Store in mainland China, a success that has attracted the attention of international media and the Chinese press.

Sileme allows users to designate a person to be notified in the event of an emergency. If the user does not log in for a few days, an email notification is automatically sent to the selected person.

The development team announced that "after careful review the Sileme app will officially adopt the global brand name Demumu in its next update."

According to the announcement, the app has seen exponential growth internationally after a BBC article was published. The team explained that Demumu was already the name of the international version, while "Are you dead?" was used exclusively in China. "Going forward, Demumu will remain true to its core mission: ensuring everyone's safety," the company said, adding that the goal is to spread this expertise globally to support more people living alone.

The app's unique name has already inspired other platforms, such as the Chinese food delivery app "Eleme" ("Are you hungry?"). At the same time, some netizens asked for the original name not to be changed, while others suggested alternatives such as "Are you alive?", "Are you online?", or "Are you there?".

By 2024, according to official statistics, people living alone made up a fifth of households in China, up from 15% a decade earlier.
