Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced.

“As a leader of the democracy movement in Venezuela, María Corina Machado is one of the most extraordinary examples of civic courage in Latin America in recent times. She is receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless work in promoting democratic rights for the Venezuelan people. Machado’s efforts to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy are also recognized,” the committee said in a statement.

Before the announcement, there was ongoing speculation that the prize might be awarded to US President Donald Trump. This speculation was fueled by the approval of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip this week.

Experts say the committee usually focuses on the sustainability of peace, the promotion of international brotherhood, and the silent work of institutions that strengthen these goals.

Last year's prize was awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, a group of atomic bombing survivors in Japan who have worked for decades to ban the use of nuclear weapons.

The Peace Prize is the only annual Nobel award given in Norway.

The award ceremony will be held on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, the wealthy Swedish industrialist and inventor of dynamite who founded the awards. He died in 1896.
