AI will translate the Mass into 60 languages - Vatican initiative to launch next week

The Vatican will offer live translations of Mass in 60 languages assisted by artificial intelligence, as the Catholic Church embraces and heeds warnings about the technology.
The service will allow worshippers to follow services on their smartphones and will be launched next week during major celebrations at St. Peter's Basilica, which mark the fourth centenary of the church's dedication, which runs from 1626 to 2026.
The AI translation will work via a QR code that attendees can scan at the Vatican entrance. They will then have real-time audio and text translations through their web browsers, without having to download an app.
The translation system uses Lara, an artificial intelligence developed by language solutions company Translated, which is in collaboration with Carnegie-AI LLC and Professor Alexander Waibel, a pioneer in artificial intelligence-powered speech translation.
Lara also uses more context than previous technologies, enabling it to clarify meaning much more effectively. According to experts, today we see the opportunity to break down language barriers in real time, realized in one of the most meaningful environments imaginable.
While the Vatican appears to be embracing artificial intelligence, Pope Leo XIV said in May that artificial intelligence poses challenges to the protection of "human dignity, justice and work."
