Moderate business growth at the end of 2025/ Albania, with above-average performance in Europe. Ireland, with the strongest decline
The European Statistical Agency has published some data on new business registrations in the European Union. In the fourth quarter of 2025, business registrations in Europe increased by 0.5% compared to the third quarter of the same year. If we look at the statistics, we notice that compared to previous periods, the growth has softened. In the same period, the number of bankruptcy declarations also increased by 2.5%.
How does Albania fare in these statistics? According to the data, the country recorded a 1.4% increase in new businesses in the fourth quarter, exceeding the European average. In the region, North Macedonia has the highest growth in Europe, with 91.4% more new registrations, while the situation is the opposite in Montenegro, where registrations have fallen by 14.4%.
After North Macedonia, Spain maintains the highest growth in Europe with 7.6% more business registrations. The same positive trend is followed by Romania and Denmark. On the other hand, Ireland has recorded the largest decline, with a decrease of around 32.2%, while Portugal and Luxembourg also report significant declines.
By economic sector, in the fourth quarter of 2025, business registrations increased in 5 of the 8 main sectors. The information and communication sector recorded the largest increase, by 6.4%, followed by industry by 4.9% and accommodation and food services by 1.3%. In contrast, modest decreases were recorded in trade (-0.3%), as well as in construction and transport (-0.1% each).
