World's tallest bridge nears completion - $283 million structure to open in September
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in China's Guizhou province, expected to become the world's highest, has successfully completed a major load test, ahead of its planned opening at the end of September.
According to the testing team, the five-day process confirmed that the structural strength, stability and dynamic performance of the bridge meet safety standards. The load test, considered the final step before opening to traffic, included static and dynamic tests.
The structure, at a cost of $283 million, is one of China's architectural wonders. Work began in January 2022 and was completed in just three years, demonstrating the country's engineering prowess.
The team controlledly placed 96 trucks, with a total weight of over 3,000 tons, at certain points on the bridge to measure displacement and tension in key parts of the structure, such as the middle segment, supporting towers, cables, and side members.
“We simulate extreme conditions with 3,360 tons of load to activate the maximum capacity of the structure under normal use conditions. Today, we are mainly focusing on monitoring the displacement of the main towers on both sides of the river, as well as the maximum tension in the cables of the mooring segment,” said Lei Min, director of the field load test.
The bridge is 2,890 meters long, with a middle segment of 1,420 meters. With a height of 625 meters above the river, it will set the record as the highest bridge in the world and the structure with the largest segment ever built in a mountainous area.
