"Black Friday", consumers buy "online" - They prefer not to

During this year's Black Friday, American consumers preferred to shop more online and not wait in line, as is tradition. According to Adobe, on Thanksgiving Day alone, Americans spent about $6.4 billion on online purchases.

Americans looking for bargains spent the Thanksgiving holiday shopping online, spending 5% more than a year ago. More and more consumers are turning to their laptops and phones to shop rather than wait in line during the big shopping weekend known as Black Friday.

Outside an electronics store in New York, there were a few shoppers queuing to check out electronics, including laptops, headphones and smartphones. Inside the store, some customers seemed cautious about their spending.

"We've been searching all last week and it seems like there's no real discount. It's the same thing all week," a tourist from South Korea told Reuters.

While early online sales figures showed a promising trend in spending at major retailers, traditional Black Friday shopping sprees were lower than in years past, when crowds lined up the morning after Thanksgiving. Many of those who ventured out said they were on a tight budget, fearful of overspending at a time when inflation remains above trend and the job market is softening.

Overall online spending on Thanksgiving Thursday rose 5.3% compared to the same day a year ago, to a total of $6.4 billion, according to Adobe Analytics, which tracks online commerce transactions. Adobe Analytics covers more than 1 trillion visits to U.S. retail sites. The day was better than expected, Adobe said, as online shopping has eclipsed Black Friday, with promotions being more widely spread out in the weeks following.
