How much does it cost to furnish and maintain a home? From the sofa to the garden. An Albanian family spends about 76 thousand lek per year

In recent years, the home is no longer seen as just a basic need, but as a space where continuous investment is made. In the past, many Albanian homes were furnished primarily for functionality. Now the focus has shifted to design, colors, harmonization of elements, and the overall style of the home.
"Scan Intel" has analyzed the family budget survey to focus specifically on the item "Furniture, household appliances and general home maintenance."
How much do Albanians spend on home furnishing and maintenance?
The data show a significant change in the share of Albanian households' spending on furniture, household appliances and general home maintenance over the years. From 2007 to 2017, this indicator fluctuated between 4.8% and 5.9%, reflecting a relatively modest commitment of households to this category. However, from 2018 onwards, spending on this sector began to increase significantly, peaking in 2020 at 6.9% and remaining above 6% in subsequent years.
The latest figures show that in the structure of monthly expenses, the group “Furniture, household appliances and general maintenance of the dwelling” accounts for 6.8% of the total. Considering that the average monthly consumption expenses amounted to 93,042 lek per family, it results that about 6,300 lek per month goes for furniture and maintenance.
In annual terms, this means that an Albanian family spends approximately 76 thousand lek per year.
If we calculate the weight of this group over the total monthly expenses at the national level, which according to INSTAT amount to around 70.4 billion lek per month, it turns out that Albanians spend approximately 4.8 billion lek each month on furnishing and maintaining their homes. In a year, this amount translates to around 57 billion lek.
But what does this category include according to INSTAT?
This item includes beds, sofas, divans, tables, chairs, sideboards, dressers and bookshelves, lighting equipment such as ceiling lamps, standard lamps, globe-shaped lamps, and bedside lampshades. All types of home textiles, electrical appliances, garden equipment and tools, carpets, their repair, payments for gardeners, cooks, nannies, etc.
