Are Albanian businesses transforming? - Trade tradition towards space for technology

The structure of new businesses says a lot about a country's economic model. In the case of Albania, data for 2025 and early 2026 speak of an economy that remains based on trade and services, but that is giving clear signals of diversification towards technology and higher value-added activities. During 2025, the sector that dominates new registrations is wholesale and retail trade, including repair of vehicles and motorcycles, with 5,341 activities. This figure confirms that Albanian entrepreneurship continues to be oriented towards activities with rapid market entry and relatively immediate return on capital.
Accommodation and food service are also in the same line with 2,878 registrations, a direct reflection of the role that tourism is playing in the local economy. Construction, with 1,663 new activities, remains another sector where investment is seen as relatively safe and closely linked to urban development.
But beyond these traditional sectors, the data shows an interesting movement. Professional, scientific and technical activities register 1,645 new businesses, while information and communication reaches 1,547 registrations during 2025. These figures suggest a growth in the technology and specialized services sector, reflecting a gradual orientation towards the knowledge economy.
The same picture appears in the first month of 2026. Trade leads with 546 registrations, followed by accommodation and food service with 261. Meanwhile, professional, scientific and technical activities reach 210 registrations, while information and communication at 154, an indication that interest in technology-based sectors is not episodic, but ongoing.
In analysis, the structure of the records shows that the Albanian economy continues to rely mainly on sectors with fast turnover and domestic consumption. However, the expansion of the technology sector and professional activities constitutes a positive signal for the gradual transformation of the economic model.
