Self-employment increases slightly in 2025/ Men and older ages maintain the highest number

Self-employment continues to play an important role in the Albanian labor market. According to data for 2025, 30.9% of employees were self-employed in total employment, marking a slight increase compared to 30.1% a year earlier.
The data shows that men remain much more likely to be self-employed than women. In 2025, 39.5% of employed men were self-employed, while this percentage was only 20.4% for women. Compared to 2024, the share of self-employed men has increased, while for women it has decreased slightly.
Age is another factor that significantly influences. Self-employment is less widespread among young people aged 15-24. The percentage gradually increases over the years, reaching 44.5% for the age group 65 and older. The age group 55-64 also presents a high level of self-employment, with 37.5%.
Education also plays an important role. People with 8/9 years of education have the highest level of self-employment, with 38.2% of them working for their own account in 2025. They are followed by those with secondary education, with 33.9%, while the percentage drops significantly among people with higher education, with only 13.5% being self-employed.
Within the tertiary education group, self-employment remains more prevalent among men. In 2025, 21.4% of tertiary educated men were self-employed, compared to only 7.1% of women with the same level of education.
At all levels of education, self-employment increases with age. The data suggest that self-employment is more common among lower-educated and older age groups, while those with higher education are more likely to be employed. At the same time, the gender gap remains significant, indicating that men continue to dominate self-employment activities.
