183.7 billion euros for defense by 2030 - Germany increases spending by 1/3 compared to the current year
Germany is preparing for a historic increase in military spending. According to the draft budget approved by the federal cabinet, 109.7 billion euros will be allocated for defense in 2027, about a third more than the funds planned for this year.
In total, the budget for 2027 amounts to 555.4 billion euros, up from 524.5 billion euros this year. According to local media, most of the additional funds will be used to modernize the armed forces and make new military purchases.
The German government argues that this increase is necessary to fulfill commitments to NATO and strengthen the country's defense capabilities, at a time when the United States is considering reducing its military presence in Europe.
According to the plan, defense spending will continue to increase in the coming years, reaching 183.7 billion euros by 2030.
The draft budget also foresees 11.6 billion euros in military aid for Ukraine through 2027. In subsequent years, this support is expected to decrease to 8.5 billion euros per year.
To cover these expenses, Chancellor Friedrich Merz's coalition government plans to borrow 118.7 billion euros in new loans for next year's basic federal budget alone.
The draft budget must now also pass approval in parliament before it can enter into force.
