Albania is gradually becoming an increasingly attractive job market for foreigners, as the number of those choosing to stay in the country for employment reasons is growing rapidly year on year. The profile of foreigners staying in Albania has changed significantly over the last five years.

Data for the period 2021-2025 show that growth has not come to the same extent for all categories, while employment has significantly strengthened as the main reason for staying.

In 2021, about 7 thousand foreigners had a residence permit for employment reasons, while in 2025 the number reached 17,724. In four years, this is an increase of about 149%, or 10,600 more people. The share of employment in total has also expanded, from 47.7% in 2021 to 55.1% in 2025.

There was also growth in family reunification, but at a slower pace. The number increased from 3,602 people in 2021 to 6,359 in 2025, or by about 77%. However, the weight of this category in the total fell from 24.1% to 19.8%, as other categories, especially employment, expanded more quickly.

The study also noted a strong increase in numbers, but a decrease in weight compared to the total. From only 413 residence permits in 2021, this category reached 1,004 in 2025, increasing by about 143%. Its weight, however, remains small and fluctuates around 3-4% of the total.

One of the biggest changes is seen in the “other” category, which increased from 1,126 to 4,526 people, or about fourfold in five years. Its weight almost doubled, from 7.6% to 14.1%.

The humanitarian category presents a different picture, which has had strong fluctuations, from 2,656 people in 2021, to 3,258 in 2022, then 2,669 in 2023, only 201 in 2024 and 2,550 in 2025.
