NATO leaders discuss defense spending - Rama departs for Ankara for two-day

Leaders of NATO's 32 member countries will focus on boosting Europe's defense spending and capabilities and massive arms procurement deals for two days in Ankara, as the United States pushes for more equitable burden-sharing within the alliance.

The summit opens with a major defense industry fair aimed at helping allies translate rapidly growing military budgets into new capabilities and multi-billion dollar procurement deals.

Under pressure from US President Donald Trump, NATO members pledged last year to drastically increase their defense budgets from 2% to 3.5% of Gross Domestic Product by 2035. This year's meeting will focus on translating these promises into concrete commitments.

Prime Minister Edi Rama is also participating in the NATO Summit, where leaders of the alliance's member countries will discuss strengthening collective defense, increasing military spending, and support for Ukraine.
