Tourism pushes construction of new hotels/ Second quarter, surfaces increase 6-fold from last year

The Institute of Statistics has recently reported statistics regarding construction permits issued during the second quarter of the year. Given that this quarter coincides with the start of the summer season, the number of permits issued for the construction of hotels and similar buildings is striking, which directly help the development of tourism, which is growing rapidly in the country.
If we compare the number of building permits for hotels during the second quarter of 2024 with the same period of 2025, a decrease in the number is noted, but the construction area for this category has increased almost 6-fold. From about 12 thousand square meters that were granted in the second quarter of last year, it has reached 71 thousand square meters this year. While compared to the first quarter of 2025, the area has increased again, tripling.
Regarding the general situation, it turns out that in the second quarter of 2025, a total of 352 building permits were approved, marking a decrease of 0.6% compared to the same period a year earlier. The total construction area has also suffered a significant decrease of 67%, going from about 844 thousand square meters to 278 thousand square meters. The approximate value of the projects reaches the figure of 18.4 billion lek, marking a decrease of 45.5%.
In the breakdown by category, residential constructions occupy the largest share with 271 permits, followed by non-residential buildings with 81 construction permits. The Durrës region holds the main share with 125 permits and an area of 129 thousand square meters. Also, a significant increase in the value of construction projects was recorded in the Durrës, Korçë and Shkodër regions.
