30% of road transport will switch to rail - Plans until 2030, report: Traffic relief and air pollution reduction
Transport in our country is expected to undergo a transformation in the coming years, which will also affect the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and adaptation to climate change. According to the State of the Environment Report, published by the National Environment Agency, by 2030, about 30% of road transport will be transferred to rail, significantly easing the load on the roads and reducing air pollution.
Currently, road transport is considered one of the main contributors to air pollution and CO2 emissions in the country, while the launch of trains is seen as one of the most important measures for reducing the consumption of fossil fuels, which are fuels.
Meanwhile, the forecast that about 30% of road transport will be shifted to rail is closely linked to the completion of some of the most important railway projects in the country, such as the Tirana - Durrës - Rinas and Vorë - Hani i Hotit lines. According to the public notices, the project for the construction of the Vorë - Hani Hotit line is expected to be completed precisely in 2030, while it is currently in the tender phase for the selection of the company that will carry out the works. Meanwhile, the Tirana - Durrës - Rinas line is more advanced, but the deadline for full completion has been postponed several times. Recently, it was announced that the trains for this railway line are expected to arrive in the first quarter of 2027.
In addition to environmental benefits, the shift towards rail transport is also expected to bring increased road safety, economic savings, and ease in the movement of goods and citizens.
