Specialties of the Regions: Who Produces What? Fier, Tirana, and Berat: The Green Trinomial that "Feeds" Albania with Vegetables
The January-March period is the time when agriculture begins its production cycle. During this time, citrus fruits such as oranges, tangerines, lemons and limes reach their peak ripeness, while fresh vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, spinach, broccoli and cauliflower supply the markets. Most of this production comes from greenhouses, which play a vital role in ensuring a steady supply of vegetables during the cold months.
According to the latest data from INSTAT, the total production of vegetables in the country has exceeded 1.38 million tons. But what is noticeable is that the contribution of the regions is not the same, as some of them are major producers, while others have lower production due to climatic and geographical factors.
Detailed statistics show an undisputed dominance of Fier, Tirana and Berat, which together produce over 835,865 tons of vegetables, which constitutes about 60% of the total. Among them, Fier continues to hold the first place as the epicenter of agricultural production, contributing about 40% of the total vegetables in the country. Tirana follows in second place, providing 11% of production, while Berat stands in third place with 10%. Furthermore, Elbasan and Durrës contribute respectively with 8% and 7.5% of the total production.
Meanwhile, mountainous regions such as Kukës and Gjirokastra have lower production, due to harsher climatic conditions and rugged terrain, which makes cultivation difficult.
But who is the best at what? When it comes to dried vegetables, such as onions, Korça and Fier take the top spot. On the other hand, for fresh vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers, Fier and Berat are the two leading producers. Meanwhile, the production of melons, which includes watermelons and melons, is mainly concentrated in Fier, Tirana, Durrës and Lezha.
