Safety at work, how does Albania rank? Fatality rate: Above the EU average, but better than France and Austria

Albania recorded a rate of 2.8 work-related fatalities per 100,000 employees in 2024. With 33 workplace fatalities, the country is positioned above the European Union average, which for 2023 was 1.63, but remains within the usual range exhibited by several other European economies.
In many EU countries, the level of fatal accidents varies significantly. Industrialized countries such as the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Finland and Sweden report lower rates, influenced by stronger safety standards and more frequent inspections. But, on the other hand, a significant group of European countries, including France, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Latvia, Austria, Portugal, Croatia and Romania, show levels ranging from around 2.5 to over 3 fatalities per 100,000 employees, bringing these indicators closer to the rate in our country.
This positioning shows that Albania is not ranked among the highest-risk countries on the continent, but is in a middle zone, comparable to countries where the construction, industry and manual labor sectors hold a large share of the economy. The structure of the labor market, the level of formalization and the presence of hazardous occupations continue to influence the figures.
