Business loan portfolio in "stagnation"/ Very slight monthly growth, despite the positive annual trend

In recent months, the Albanian economy has experienced a significant increase in total credit, reflecting a stable development and increased confidence in the financial sector. However, according to the latest data from the “Bank of Albania”, total credit reached 906 billion lekë in October 2025, with a significant increase of 11.5%, compared to October last year, but also marked a slight increase of 0.5% compared to September of the same year.
So, if we talk in absolute figures, it turns out that in the span of one month, credit has increased by about 4.2 billion lek, while in the span of one year it records an increase of 93 billion lek.
In annual terms, this increase is mainly attributed to the expansion of lending to “Other non-financial corporations”. Business credit has increased significantly over the past year. From 457 billion lek in October last year, it has increased by about 39 billion lek in October this year, reaching about 497 billion lek. The growth over the past year is estimated at 8.7%.
This growth was mainly supported by an increase in foreign currency loans, which reached 267 billion lek, from 245 billion lek. In one year, foreign currency loans increased by 9%, while loans in lek increased by 8.4%.
However, the latest data shows a clear contrast in lending to businesses. While there has been solid growth over the year, October marks an almost complete stagnation in the stock of credit to private enterprises. This behavior signals a waiting phase, both by banks and companies.
So, if we refer to the one-month period, business credit seems to have stagnated at the same value as in September with a very slight increase of 0.004%.
Over the course of a month, “Credit to public non-financial corporations” had the highest growth of 10%.
