From immigrants to citizens, where are Albanians getting citizenship? Sweden, the Netherlands and Finland are gaining ground in recent years

Albanians living abroad are increasingly moving from temporary residence to permanent settlement in host countries. Eurostat data released by the publication “Diaspora in Figures” shows that Italy and Greece are the two main countries where Albanians have acquired citizenship, confirming that these destinations are no longer simply places of work, but places of long-term residence.
According to official statistics, Italy convincingly leads the list of countries where Albanians have obtained citizenship, while Greece ranks second, where the trend is constantly increasing.
Germany, France and Sweden emerge as important destinations, but at more moderate rates. In Germany, the number of Albanians who gained citizenship has remained relatively stable, around 480 people per year. In France, a slight decline is observed in 2023, while Sweden marks a strong increase, signaling increased interest in Northern European countries.
The data also shows that Western and Northern European countries, such as Belgium, the Netherlands, Finland and Norway, are gradually gaining ground as sustainable destinations for Albanians, although the figures remain significantly lower compared to Italy and Greece.
In contrast, Eastern European and Baltic countries record minimal or zero figures for the acquisition of citizenship by Albanians, which indicates that these countries are seen primarily as transit or temporary residence areas rather than as destinations for long-term residence.
Experts estimate that gaining citizenship represents the final stage of emigration, full social, economic, and legal integration into the host country.
