In Vlora, 1 in 5 families consists of one person / About 4.3% of the total population in Albania lives alone

Low birth rates, migratory and immigrant movements, as well as the increase in the number of deaths have brought significant changes in the family structure, reports the 2023 Census.
"Scan Intel" analyzed the detailed data of the report, to understand in which counties there are more families with only 1 member. The figures show that 4.3% of the total population lives alone. But how is the situation in the districts?
Analyzed at the district level, Vlora and Gjirokastra hold similar positions in terms of the number of family units with only one member. Specifically, in Vlora, nearly 19% of the total families have only one member, while in Gjirokastra this figure reaches 16.37%. These are the two counties with the highest number of families with only one person. Shkodra ranks third with about 7,600 one-member families, followed by Korça with about 7,800.
The counties of Durrës and Fier also have high percentages of the population living alone, respectively with 13.4% and 13.3%, while in the capital there are over 40,000 families with only one member.
In contrast, Berat is the county with the lowest rate of families whose structure consists of a single member. In this district, only 0.34% of family units consist of only one individual.
Meanwhile, in Elbasan, Dibër and Kukës, the family structure is dominated by married or cohabiting couples, often with children, preserving traditional family nuclei. For some families in these counties, a single parent with children is also a common structure.
On the other hand, it turns out that in the entire country there are about 64,000 people over 60 who live completely alone. This figure reflects a difficult social reality for these elderly who face the absence of family members near them.
