In which county are there more singles? About 36.6% of the population have never

According to Census 2023 data, Albanians are getting married less and less. About 36.6% of the total population in the country is single or never married. Of this percentage, 44.3% are women and 55.7% are men, this percentage being higher and due to the later average age of marriage of the latter. Changes in lifestyle, rising age of marriage, gradual aging of the population and high emigration of young people are some of the main factors influencing this trend.

But how widespread is this phenomenon in the regions of Albania? Where are there more singles and where less? In a detailed analysis, Scan Intel compared data from the resident and single population to determine the number of singles per 1,000 residents.

According to the calculations, Kukësi ranks first with 423 singles per 1,000 inhabitants. A large part of the population has migrated to big cities or abroad for better job opportunities, leading to a high singleton structure in the area.

Next, Tirana ranks with 413 singles per 1,000 inhabitants. Being a large urban center with numerous employment opportunities, many young people choose to focus on their careers while postponing marriage.

Dibra also has a high percentage of people who are not married, where the ratio of singles per 1,000 inhabitants in this district is 392. After Dibra comes Durres and Berat with 376 and 363 singles per 1,000 inhabitants respectively. Likewise, Lezha and Shkodra have similar figures in terms of the number of singles. Specifically, Lezha has 362 singles per 1,000 inhabitants, while Shkodra has 357.

Even Elbasan shows a significant percentage of the single population. With 344 singles per 1,000 inhabitants, this county represents a demographic structure largely influenced by immigration. Meanwhile, in Korçë, Vlorë and Fier, the ratio of singles per 1,000 inhabitants is, respectively, 322, 315 and 302. At the bottom of the list is Gjirokastra with 292 singles per 1,000 inhabitants.

What is observed in all districts is that the number of single men is higher than that of single women. On average, we have 33.9% or 8,408 more unmarried men than women. The difference is more pronounced in the district of Gjirokastra, where single men significantly exceed the number of women with the same status. Specifically, there are 55% more single men in this county.
