Fewer Greek and Italian businesses in the country/ Kosovo and Turkey "strengthened" their presence in 2024
In Albania, enterprises with foreign owners or co-owners account for 5.3% of the total number of active businesses in the country. However, their impact on the labor market is much higher, these businesses employ 12.8% of the labor force, demonstrating their important role in the Albanian economy.
The majority of these enterprises come from European Union countries, which represent 60.7% of the total foreign and joint ventures. Within this category, Italy and Greece occupy a special place. Together they represent 46.4% of active foreign enterprises.
Enterprises are concentrated in three main municipalities. Tirana holds the first place with 64.8% of them, followed by Durrës with 10.9% and Vlora with 5.0%. This concentration clearly shows the tendency of foreign businesses to invest in urban and port centers with greater economic potential.
Data from 2024 show that the total number of foreign and joint ventures in Albania has reached 7,007, with an increase of 1% compared to the previous year. The two countries that recorded the highest growth were Turkey with 12.4% and Kosovo with 12.1%, indicating increased interest in investments and economic cooperation from these countries.
On the other hand, Italian and Greek enterprises have suffered a slight decline. Italy by 3.2% and Greece by 3.0%, a possible indicator of a slowdown in investments or the closure of some existing businesses.
Businesses from Israel also recorded a decline in 2024, compared to 2023.
According to INSTAT, the majority of foreign and joint ventures operate in the services sector and are small enterprises with up to 4 employees.
