Greeks don't pay taxes - 3 billion euros in liabilities in the first four months of the year
Greek households and businesses have failed to pay tax obligations totaling 3 billion euros in the first four months of the year. The number of debtors increased by 470,000 to 4,242,507 in April.
Overall, overdue debts to the Tax Authority have broken the 110 billion euro barrier and have risen to 110.8 billion euro, of which 26.35 billion are uncollectible, resulting in a net debt of 84.45 billion euro.
Out of 4,242,507 debtors, 2,23,160 are open to seizure of deposits and assets, while mandatory debt collection measures have been imposed on 1,594,218 debtors.
In the first four months of the year, collections of old and new debts reached 2.09 billion euros, with the benchmark set this year at over 6 billion euros. The Public Administration Authority aims to collect at least 3 billion euros of old unpaid debts of taxpayers. Also, actions against large debtors could reach the value of 700 million euros.
At the same time, the tax collection mechanism is putting pressure on those who owe more than 150,000 euros. The deadline for repayment is June 20. Last year, the list included 29,195 individuals and legal entities, with total debts exceeding 146.1 billion euros.
Also, according to the Operational Plan for 2025, the tax collection mechanism will continue until the end of the year with a “write-off” of arrears to the Tax Authority, temporarily “removing” debts of 10 billion euros that are considered uncollectible. Despite repeated efforts, they have remained uncollected for years and their collection is considered impossible.
