Births hit their deepest decline in 3 decades/ In 2025, around 21 thousand babies were born, 8% less than in 2024

Albania's population is facing a decline year after year, mainly due to a decrease in the number of births and high emigration. Demographic data published by the Institute of Statistics show that in 2025 the lowest number of births in more than 3 decades was recorded, thus breaking the negative record of recent years. Last year, around 21,425 thousand births were registered in Albania, marking a decrease of 8.1% compared to the previous year.
In a detailed analysis of the past year, the figures show that the third quarter marked the highest number of births, only to decrease in the fourth quarter. This trend of declining birth rates shows that Albania is not only shrinking but also aging very quickly. This is also confirmed by the figures of young people leaving Albania. On the other hand, in 2025, 20,245 deaths were recorded, which shows an improvement compared to 2024, where the number of fatalities was around 22 thousand.
Another important demographic indicator is the natural increase of the population, which represents the difference between births and deaths. This indicator is a key factor in demographic dynamics, as it reflects whether the population is growing or shrinking naturally, without taking into account emigration. If the number of births exceeds that of deaths, the natural increase is positive. Conversely, a negative natural increase indicates a demographic contraction.
The positive thing is that the natural increase has been positive in recent years since the impact of the pandemic, but the figure is decreasing year after year. During 2025, the natural increase is estimated at 1,180 more births, but in 2024 this indicator was 1,208.
Compared to 36 years ago, the natural increase in the population has decreased significantly with almost 60 thousand more births than deaths.
