Gjirokastra, Fier and Kukës drive consumption growth/ Spending remained

Albanian families have expanded their portfolios by an average of about 1.5% more during 2024, spending 93 thousand lek per month. For an average family of 3 members, this value translates to about 3 thousand lek per day. In addition to an increase in consumption, we can also call it a breath of fresh air after a year of subdued inflation and prices that are still felt in the market for the pockets of some citizens.

In the capital, expenses are the highest in the country at 108.6 thousand lekë per month per family, about 16% above the national average. However, the increase is minimal at only 0.5% compared to 2023.

The second region with the highest expenses is Korça, with around 91 thousand lek per month, surpassing even coastal regions such as Durrës or Vlora.

However, the strongest growth was recorded in Gjirokastra with 2.9%, Kukës with 2.5% and Fier with 2.3%. These regions have more dynamic movements in consumption, which can be related to increased incomes, the impact of remittances or local developments in tourism and employment. In Gjirokastra, families now spend 84.4 thousand lekë per month, surpassing some larger areas such as Elbasan.

In Durrës, Korçë and Lezha, the changes are slight (from 0.4% to 0.7%).

At the other end of the table are the regions with the lowest consumption, where monthly household expenses are significantly below the national average. Kukës ranks last with only 75 thousand lekë, about 19% less than the average, followed by Dibra with 75.8 thousand lekë and Elbasan with 80.9 thousand lekë, 18% and 13% less, respectively.

These differences indicate a strong economic divide between the urban center and the northeastern outskirts of the country, where purchasing power remains significantly lower.

On average, Albanian families spend 93 thousand lek per month, a modest increase that indicates careful consumption, not large purchases.
