Illiteracy among young people, alarm for education/ Fieri records the highest rate for the 10-19 age group
The 2023 Census results show a literacy rate (the ability to read and write a short, simple statement about their daily life) of 97.7% for the population aged 15 and over. The literacy rate for young people aged 15-24 is 99.1%.
According to the Census report, the World Bank estimated that in 2022, 87 percent of the world's population is able to read and write a short and simple statement about their daily life, while 13 percent were illiterate. In Albania, the illiteracy rate for the population aged 15 and over is 2.3%. In people aged 70 and over, it is noted that the illiteracy rate is higher, being estimated at 7.6%.
Taking the trigger from November 22, the Day of the Alphabet of the Albanian Language, "Scan Intel" has further analyzed the Census data, focusing on the illiteracy rate for the 10-19 age group according to the districts. This age group was taken into focus as it coincides with students in 9-year and secondary education.
According to the figures, the district with the highest illiteracy rate for the 10-19 age group is Fieri. This group in this district constitutes about 1.2% of the population of the same age group, or in absolute terms there are 299 young people. Gjirokastra follows in line with a rate of 1.1%, followed by Shkodra and Dibra with 0.9% each.
The counties with the lowest rate of illiteracy of the 10-19 age group compared to the total of the same age group are Tirana and Vlora with 0.6% each.
We must emphasize that the highest number of illiterates in this age group have never attended education. This is a moment when we have to raise another question. Why do these young people not attend school? Poverty is one of the main reasons that forces young people to drop out of school to work and provide income for the family. Immigration, family problems, lack of support, bullying and violence are some other factors that also influence.
