The "disappearance" of old businesses - Watchmaker: If it is not inherited, my business risks closure

In every city in Albania, somewhere among the new buildings or modern premises, there are still hidden, or are there, businesses or workshops that can now be considered a memory, which may belong to another time.
For decades, these workshops have been mastered by the hands of the masters who opened these workshops, but currently they are in danger of being left without heirs. The generation that opened them is getting older. While the new generation has already chosen another path.”
Young people almost never prefer to work as shoemakers, watchmakers, or even tailors, because they can be considered "ordinary" jobs.
Nazmi Sula – Watchmaker:
"I started this craft when I was 15 years old, repairing pocket watches, which were usually centuries-old watches at that time. Wall clocks, my passion for watches grew a lot. I would watch watchmakers in Tirana working, I would go there. I wanted to see how they worked, because I am self-taught, I learned the craft myself."
According to Nazmi Sula, who has been practicing this craft since the 1990s, he has also taught it to his son. He emphasizes that if this business is not inherited, it will be destroyed.
"I taught my son that when he was little, he started repairing, he started tinkering with watches, then he went to high school for music, he won the lottery to go to America, and he works as a waiter in America. Maybe one day he can come back."
But how profitable are these businesses?
"As for profitability, I can't say with numbers, but I have raised children with this profession, and I have raised them, educated them, and educated them. And I managed to buy my own business, to build a house just with this profession. But I am dedicated to it from morning until dinner."
The message for young people is that these trades should not be prejudiced or underestimated, because one day they will be highly sought-after and highly profitable trades.
