The 11 million euro laundering scheme is revealed - Tax Investigation: It took place in Albania and was transferred to Canada
A scheme to launder 11 million euros from a fictitious company in Albania to Canada is discovered in Tirana. The Directorate of Tax Investigation in the General Directorate of Taxes finalized an important phase of the several-month investigation in cooperation with the Financial Intelligence Agency (FIU), for the identification of a group of persons who in the 2021-2022 timeframe had managed to clear this a lot of money.
According to the official announcement, at the beginning of December 2024, the above investigative acts were referred to the Court of First Instance of the General Jurisdiction of Tirana, for the criminal offenses of "Concealing income" and "Cleaning the proceeds of a criminal offense or criminal activity".
The authorities have carried out checks in various places in Tirana and seized a lot of material evidence of interest to the investigation, such as computer units, mobile phones, numerous written documents, etc.
Also, two Albanian citizens have been detained on suspicion of having committed the above criminal acts and work is being done to identify other citizens involved in this criminal activity.
The investigations so far have proven that some citizens in cooperation with each other had set up a genuine criminal scheme for the transfer of money through bank transactions, using shell companies in the states of fiscal havens, such as Cyprus, Gibraltar, Malta, etc., money that were transferred to Albania in fictitiously created companies here, and then transferred to the Canadian state.
For this operation, the Directorate of Tax Investigation has cooperated with the Tirana District Prosecutor's Office, the Financial Intelligence Agency and the Sector for Economic and Financial Crime in the Tirana Local Police Directorate.
