Food self-sufficiency, how does Albania rank - We produce more fruit and dairy

Visual Capitalist has published a study in the scientific journal Nature (2025). This assessment compares the level of food production of countries with national dietary guidelines, showing how capable an economy is of feeding its population with basic products.

Albania has significant surpluses in the production of fruit (214%) and dairy products (225%), but there are shortages in cereals (only 25% of the need is covered), meat (46%) and fish (30%). Even for vegetables (97%) and starchy foods such as cereals and potatoes (114%), the country is close to or slightly above the self-sufficiency limit, but not in a sustainable way.

Compared to other countries in the region, Albania is in an intermediate position. Serbia, for example, ranks 18th with notable outperformance in categories such as fruit (295%), meat (393%) and cereals (460%). Bosnia, which is only one place above Albania (in 40th place), has a better performance in vegetables (171%) and fish (216%), but is weaker in meat (56%) and legumes (50%).

At the top of the list is Guyana, which covers and significantly exceeds needs for all food categories, reaching figures such as 403% for fruits, 561% for starchy foods and 319% for meat. This country constitutes the best example of food self-sufficiency in this analysis.

The data clearly shows that Albania still has a way to go to achieve a sustainable balance in food production. Improving the legume, meat and fish sectors is essential to ensure food security and reduce dependence on imports.
