Will the current euros disappear? New banknote designs, citizens invited to vote
After the European Central Bank (ECB) published the selected proposals for the design of the next series of euro banknotes, a public consultation has been opened, where citizens across Europe will give their opinions until September 21, 2026.
The selected proposals are the result of a European Union-wide design competition, which received more than 1,200 entries from graphic designers. The current euro banknotes will continue to retain their value and will circulate alongside the new series. This will be the first complete redesign of euro banknotes since their introduction in 2002.
The selected proposals include well-known historical and cultural figures, such as Marie Skłodowska Curie, the only scientist to have won the Nobel Prize in both physics and chemistry, composer Ludwig van Beethoven and artist Leonardo da Vinci. Another series of proposals focuses on nature and includes figures of birds, including the bituminous bird and the white stork, according to the ECB.
Through this change, the European Central Bank also aims to increase the sustainability of the banknotes and reduce their impact on the environment. This collection was presented in Kosovo this Saturday, where the Governor of the Central Bank of Kosovo, Ahmet Ismaili, invited citizens to participate in the public consultation organized by the European Central Bank (ECB) for the selection of the new design of the euro banknotes series.
He emphasized that this initiative is of particular importance for Kosovo, as the euro is the country's official currency.
" Although Kosovo is not yet a member of the European Union and the eurozone, our path towards European integration is being supported by important reforms, including the modernization of the payment system and the advancement of the integration process into the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) , "said Ismaili.
Participating in the public consultation is not only an opportunity to express your preference for the new design of euro banknotes, but also to strengthen financial knowledge and education.
Citizens who wish to participate in the ECB's public consultation can do so via a published link.
