"High dependence on remittances" - Migration survey presented, Dhuli: It shapes Albanian society
The Family Migration Survey was presented this Monday, where it is estimated that around 1.6 million Albanians live abroad.
The Director of INSTAT, Elsa Dhuli, in her speech said that migration is a very important element of Albanian families and dependence on remittances remains high.
Evis Sulko, deputy director of the Albania group at the World Bank, said that the majority of migrants have not received support.
The survey shows that before departure, migrants have incomes about 10% lower than non-migrants and often overestimate earnings abroad; in reality, they end up earning 40% less than they expected, which is also reflected in lower savings.
Meanwhile, during migration, the financial benefit is clear, on average migrants earn 2.5 times more than before migration, but it is accompanied by more informal arrangements and more limited social protection coverage.
