Llogara Tunnel, safety and operation improvement - ARRSH opens 311 million lek

The Albanian Road Authority has announced the opening of the tender for the maintenance of equipment and operation of the Llogara Tunnel. The estimated limit fund is 311 million lek.

According to the document published by the Public Procurement Agency, the contractor in the capacity of Tunnel Manager will be responsible for the management and proper functioning of the tunnel, its surrounding areas, as well as the maintenance of the tunnel's equipment and operating systems. The Tunnel Manager is the body, public or private, responsible for the management of a road tunnel in the relevant phase, which will provide the required tunnel management/operation services and the required maintenance and operation services of its equipment.

As a fundamental objective, it will ensure above all safety, effectiveness and efficiency in work, the most economical operation of the tunnel and its accesses in accordance with the objectives of the EU Directive. It will also ensure effective maintenance for operating machinery and all assembly works that are necessary for the smooth running of the tunnel.

Meanwhile, the construction works for the tunnel started on November 15, 2021, after a tender competition was held and won by a Turkish consortium. The Llogara Tunnel was officially opened on July 5, 2024, to facilitate access for vehicle traffic towards southern Albania.

The Llogara Tunnel is 6 km long, and shortens the access time to the south of the country by about 45 minutes. It is part of the Orikum - Himara road section of the Vlora - Saranda Highway, while it starts from the St. Eliza Bridge and exits at the Palasa Bridge, completely avoiding the Llogara Pass.
