Durrës-Rrogozhinë electric train - Government ratifies EU grant agreement of 60.5 million euros
At its last meeting, the Council of Ministers ratified the grant agreement with the European Investment Bank for the Durrës – Rrogozhina railway line, part of Corridor VIII. The grant of 60.5 million euros is part of the European Union's financial support under the Western Balkans Investment Framework and is accompanied by a loan of 30 million euros from the EIB, which will help modernize the 34 km railway line.
For the implementation of the project, a loan worth 30 million euros will be allocated from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, as an integral part of the financing package of 120.5 million euros. Meanwhile, the remaining part of 90 million euros will be financed through a loan from the European Investment Bank and an EU grant, allocated through the Western Balkans Investment Framework.
The project aims to rehabilitate the Durrës – Rrogozhina railway line. The line will be electrified and brought closer to European Union standards, enabling train travel at speeds of up to 120 km/h. The investment is part of Corridor VIII, a strategic pan-European axis connecting Italy with Albania, North Macedonia and Bulgaria, serving as a hub for the transport of passengers, goods and potentially for military mobility purposes.
Beyond the economic and strategic benefits, the project is expected to have a positive impact on the environment by shifting traffic from roads to railways, significantly reducing pollution and carbon emissions.
