External debt falls to 10.5 billion euros - BoA: 40.5% of its ratio to Gross Domestic Product

Albania's external debt is around 10.5 billion euros. According to data from the Bank of Albania, the stock of external debt has shrunk by 137 million euros or 1.3% at the end of 2024.
Official statistics show that at the end of June 2025, gross external debt fell to 40.5% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), from 41.5% at the end of the first quarter.
Nearly 88% of the total debt is long-term debt, while 12% is short-term debt. Specifically, long-term external debt is estimated at 9.2 billion euros, down compared to the first quarter, and short-term debt at nearly 1.3 billion euros.
In terms of long-term external debt by instrument, loans continue to lead at 44% of the total. On the other hand, financial instruments in the form of currency and deposits, as well as trade credits and advances account for 29% and 49% of the short-term debt stock, respectively.
The European currency (EUR) is the main currency in which Albania's obligations to the world are denominated. About 7.8 billion or 74% of the external debt is in euros, while only 8% is in US dollars.
According to the Bank of Albania, public creditors, i.e. loans from international financial institutions, hold the largest share of the long-term external debt stock. Portfolio investments of private banks and government, as well as loans from private banks and other private institutions, constitute 19% and 15% of the long-term external debt, respectively.
