Deepening of the Vivari Canal, Minister Salla: After 17 years, conditions are being created for the export of mussels
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Andis Salla, together with the Mayor of Saranda Oltion Caci, the Mayor of Konispol Ergest Dule and deputies of the area, Ardit Bido and Vasil Llajo inspected the works for the deepening of the Vivari Canal in Butrint, an important intervention for the restoration of the hydrological functionality of the canal and the development of the aquaculture and fishing sector.
After more than 17 years without intervention, the dredging process has begun in the Vivari Canal, which in the first phase foresees the removal of about 50 thousand m³ of sediments. The intervention aims to improve the natural exchange of waters between the Butrint Lagoon and the Ionian Sea, oxygenation and salinity levels, important factors for the preservation of the ecosystem and the cultivation of mussels.
During the inspection, Minister Salla emphasized that the intervention comes after many years and is directly related to the development of the area's economy and the creation of conditions for the restoration of quotas for mussel cultivation.
"We are in the Vivari Canal, together with the mayors of Saranda and Konispol, the deputies and the team of the Ministry of Agriculture, for the investment we are making to deepen the canal. For the first time in many years, we will also open mussel quotas, a very important process for the local economy, but also for the Albanian consumer", said Minister Salla.
The works are being carried out using a special dredge, which allows intervention to the necessary depth of the channel and the removal of sediments accumulated over the years. The process aims to restore the natural circulation of waters and create more favorable conditions for the habitat of the Butrint Lagoon.
The Mayor of Saranda, Oltion Çaçi, praised the importance of the investment for mussel farmers and the prospect of expanding the market. According to him, the intervention will create conditions for production to develop at the necessary pace, responding to the growing demand from consumers and tourists, as well as creating prospects for export.
Along the same lines, during the inspection it was emphasized that the deepening of the Vivari Canal, together with interventions in the channels that supply the lagoon with freshwater, helps improve the natural circulation of waters and create favorable conditions for flora, fauna and the activity of mussel farmers.
Minister Salla underlined that preserving this investment requires the cooperation of central institutions, local government, and the community of fishermen and farmers in the area.
"It is a joint effort between the Ministry of Agriculture, the local government and the fishermen of the area. We must all preserve it together, so that after so many years we can finally open the quotas for mussels and give a new impetus to the local economy", concluded Minister Salla.
