Energy storage scheme with pumps - Plant in Koman and Fierza HPPs for increasing energy capacities
Since Albania is highly dependent on annual rainfall for hydroelectric power generation, this vulnerability to weather changes creates significant fluctuations in local energy production, which has not been able to meet demand. For this reason, a pumped storage scheme is expected to be developed soon that transfers water between the Fierza and Koman reservoirs, storing energy during low demand and generating electricity during periods of high demand.
In the framework of the "Pump Storage Plant" project, KESH has held a meeting with representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the delegation of the European Union, on the development of this plant for the use of the power of the Fierza and Koman hydropower plants, with the aim of increasing renewable energy capacity of Albania, energy conservation and improvement of regional energy security.
The investment consists of using the already installed capacity of 500 MW in the Fierza HPP and 600 MW of the installed capacity in the Koman HPP to implement the pumped storage scheme. This scheme involves the use of tunnels to pump water between the lakes of Fierza and Koman. In a pumped storage scheme, when electricity prices are lower, water is pumped from the lower lake (Komani) to the upper lake (Fierze), and when prices are higher, this scheme produces electricity by pumping water from the upper lake (Fierzë) to the lower lake (Komani). Such a model is also being applied by Shtatkraft in the Devolli hydropower plant project.
