How will the “Asllan Rusi” Sports Palace be transformed? - About 14 thousand square meters and 6000 seats. Training field and recreational space
“First place is MVRDV”, the project of the Dutch architectural studio has been announced the winner of the International Competition for the Renaissance of the “Asllan Rusi” Sports Palace. After the presentation of the projects before an international jury of the 6 finalist teams, the work done by MVRDV was appreciated as the one that can put Tirana on the stage of those cities that host international sports activities.
"The fourth MVRDV team, one word explains everything they did, iconic, with a very strong personality, a very clear identity. Strong, memorable and unique. It is a project that could be internationally recognizable and could put Tirana on the stage of those cities that develop international activities. In fact, it could create a moment that is a sign of a Tirana, but also simple and complex."
MVRDV is the prestigious studio that transformed the Tirana Pyramid from a museum dedicated to communist dictator Enver Hoxha into a new cultural center. According to experts, the project for the Renaissance of the Sports Palace has the same potential as that of the Pyramid.
"Tirana is a city of architecture, but being a city of sports is really a bonus. This project has the potential to have the effect that the Pyramid has, in terms of functionality."
The new complex expands the structure from 5,000 to 13,500 square meters above ground. It offers 6,000 seats, 2,500 square meters of outdoor sports areas and 12,500 square meters of public parking. Arenas for basketball, volleyball, handball, gymnastics, boxing, taekwondo, weightlifting and wrestling.
The "Asllan Rusi" Sports Palace, with an area of almost 14 thousand square meters, will have the appearance of a white basketball ball with a glass structure. It will be multidimensional, where in addition to training fields, other recreational spaces with lots of vegetation will be offered inside.
"Asllan Rusi", built in 1963 with a capacity of 4,000 seats at the time, will now be a modern and multifunctional arena.
