Card payments increase at POS terminals - BoS: 21.7% increase in the number of transactions. The 2023 record is exceeded
Over the past year, card purchases made through POS terminals have increased. In the period January-November 2024, citizens made more payments via POS, thus surpassing the record of 2023.
According to official statistics, in 11 months, a total of 17 million payments were made with POS terminals, amounting to a total value of 743 million lek.
On the other hand, the number of POS cash withdrawal transactions is estimated at 359. Compared to 2023, there is an increase of 21.7% in the number of payments from these terminals and almost 16% in their amount.
The latest data from the Bank of Albania shows that during November, 1.8 million card payments were made through POS terminals, an increase of 2.4% compared to October. Meanwhile, only 71 cash withdrawals were made through these terminals.
In terms of transaction value, the total payments made through POS amounted to 74 million lek, while cash withdrawals were in very small amounts.
Despite the fact that from year to year there is an increase in POS and consequently in transactions carried out with them, the number of these terminals in relation to the number of businesses in Albania is very small.
Businesses continue to hesitate to use such a terminal due to the high commissions applied by international bank card companies such as VISA and Mastercard.
According to the Medium-Term Revenue Strategy 2024-2027, in order to reduce payments made in cash, i.e. to reduce the use of physical money in the economy, within this year it is intended to reduce commissions for businesses that use POS terminals.
