Albania towards purchasing the embassy in London - Rules for the permanent diplomatic headquarters approved

Albania has taken a concrete step towards securing a permanent seat for its diplomatic mission in London. With a decision adopted on January 23, 2026, the Council of Ministers has set the rules and procedures for the purchase of a real estate property that will serve as the seat of the Embassy of the Republic of Albania in the United Kingdom. The limit fund for this purchase has been set at up to 520 million lek.
According to the decision, the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with the Embassy in London, will carry out the purchase process, while the identification of the assets will be carried out by the head of the diplomatic mission. The proposed facilities must meet strict functional, legal and security criteria, as well as be suitable for diplomatic and consular activity, also in the long term. For each evaluation process, at least three alternative offers will be presented.
To ensure transparency and institutional control, a Special Inter-Institutional Commission, chaired by the Deputy Minister responsible for Foreign Affairs and with representatives from several key state institutions, is envisaged. This commission will review the bids, supervise the negotiations, evaluate the draft purchase contract and, ultimately, declare the winning bid or decide on its disqualification.
The process also foresees the establishment of an ad hoc technical secretariat within the ministry, which will assist the commission and administer the technical-legal documentation. After the selection of the winning bid, the minister will authorize the head of mission to sign the contract, while the embassy will make the relevant payments and register the property according to British legislation.
The decision is seen as a strategic investment, aiming to strengthen Albania's institutional presence in one of the world's most important diplomatic and financial capitals, giving the Albanian diplomatic representation a more stable and functional base in London.
