Albania, 16 agreements on pension recognition - Institutional cooperation for social security
Albania has signed and is now implementing bilateral social security agreements with 16 different countries, guaranteeing protection and benefits for citizens who have worked in more than one country.
These agreements help preserve pension rights and other benefits for insured persons who have moved between Albania and other countries, ensuring that no contribution period is lost and that pensions are received from both respective systems.
They are based on common principles, such as equal treatment of citizens, clear determination of the country responsible for insurance, preservation of acquired rights, export of benefits, and administrative cooperation between the institutions of the respective countries.
Currently, these agreements have been implemented with Turkey since 2005, with Belgium since January 2016, Luxembourg and North Macedonia since mid-2016, Hungary since July of the same year, with the Czech Republic since February 2017, Germany since December 2017 and Austria since the end of 2018. In recent years, agreements with Kosovo, Canada, Switzerland, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania have also been added, while in 2025, agreements with Montenegro and Italy will also enter into force.
The latter is the most important because the beneficiaries of this agreement are expected to be around 500 thousand Albanians, being where the emigration of young Albanians has been most focused over the years. These agreements are a guarantee for all those who have worked and contributed to the social security systems inside and outside the country, enabling them not to lose the benefits earned through years of work.
