US involved in reviving IAP pipeline - Project connects Croatia with Albania,

The United States is involved in the revival of the Adriatic-Ionian pipeline, an energy project that starts in Fier and, through Montenegro, goes to Croatia. The development comes after the intergovernmental agreement on strategic projects, signed between the US and Montenegro on July 24, 2026 in Washington, while the documents published by the American side also include the Montenegrin segment of the IAP pipeline.

According to the document dated August 6, 2026, the project envisages about 94 km of the pipeline in the territory of Montenegro, as part of a wider corridor connecting Albania with Croatia. Inclusion in the new framework of cooperation with the US gives new impetus to a project that has been discussed for years, but has not yet materialized on the ground.

The IAP is designed as a bi-directional pipeline. It was originally conceived primarily to transport northward gas arriving in Albania via the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline, but the new pipeline potentially opens up a supply route for American liquefied natural gas arriving at the Krk LNG terminal in Croatia.

The IAP is designed to connect the Croatian gas transmission system with the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline in Fier. The pipeline from Croatia to Albania extends over 500 km, passing through Montenegro, while Bosnia and Herzegovina will also be connected to this corridor.

The Albanian section is designed to be approximately 170.3 km long and, according to the previously drafted Environmental and Social Impact Assessment documentation, the route passes through 12 municipalities. The pipeline starts near the village of Seman, while the connection point with Montenegro is on the Buna River.
