How much does the back-to-school bill cost? - Up to 27 thousand lek for the bag, stationery, clothes and shoes

A few days before the start of the new school year, parents are facing the bill for preparing their children. For the 2026–2027 school year, students in grades one through five of public schools are provided with free textbooks, while those in grades six through nine receive books for free use. In secondary education, only specific categories of students benefit from this scheme.
Although textbooks are provided free of charge for some students, purchasing a bag, stationery, clothing, and shoes requires a considerable amount of money. A standard bag costs around 2,500 lek, while the best quality ones reach up to 5 thousand lek, not including the school supplies bag, which costs from 350 lek for the simple ones, to 3 thousand lek for those with all the necessary tools inside.
Then comes the filling of the bag. Ten notebooks cost about 700 lek, while colored pencils range from 230 to 500 lek. With pens, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, rulers, drawing pads, folders and envelopes, stationery alone can cost from 2,500 to 4 thousand lek. In total, the bag together with basic school supplies requires at least 3,500 to 4 thousand lek in the most economical variant. For products of average quality, the bill is calculated from 5,500 to 7 thousand lek.
But the expenses don't end with stationery. A pair of children's sneakers costs from about 1,900 lek for discounted models and reaches up to 4,900 lek. If two pairs of pants, some T-shirts, socks and a sports kit are added, the clothes alone can require another 10 to 15 thousand lek. Thus, the economic preparation of a student for the new school year starts from about 15 thousand lek. For a standard basket, which includes a bag, stationery, clothes and sneakers, the expense can reach from 20 to 27 thousand lek. For a family with two children, the preparation bill can exceed 40 thousand lek.
