How developed is Albania in digital skills? - RCC: Our businesses surpass those

Albania surpasses the Western Balkans and Europe in the number of graduates in Information and Communication Technology, in relation to the total of all students graduated in the country. According to a report by the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC), young graduates in this field constitute 8% of all graduates in Albania.

But despite this, our country is far behind other countries in terms of basic digital skills or IT specialists. So, even though we have a higher percentage of graduates in Information and Communication Technology, ICT specialists made up only 1% of Albania's workforce, significantly lower than the average of 3% of Western Balkan countries.

This is because these young people often choose to contribute to the European labor market where a profession in this field pays more than in Albanian businesses.

Albania has had a significant improvement in digital skills compared to previous years, but still lags behind the Western Balkans and European Union averages.

The Regional Cooperation Council states, among other things, that our country has the highest rate of internet coverage of the population. Also, Albania has the largest number of users of online public services compared to the countries of the Western Balkans and those of Europe.

What about the digital transformation of businesses? Our businesses use social networks to promote their activity, more than European businesses. However, only 27% of small and medium-sized enterprises in Albania had at least a basic level of digital intensity, falling below the Western Balkans average of 43% and the European Union average of 58%.

Developing the skills needed for digital transformation is one of the main goals of the Albanian government. For this reason, strategic documents have been drafted with several measures to support the development of digital skills. Investments have also been made in the establishment of technology and innovation centers such as TUMO Tirana or programs such as Digital Valley Albania (DiVA) and Digital Jobs Albania.
