Fire figures, Albania far from regional records // Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, the most affected in the last decade
Data from the European Forest Fire Information System for the period 2015–2025 show that Albania has lost about 233 thousand hectares to fires, less than Bosnia and Herzegovina (470 thousand ha) or Montenegro (236 thousand ha). In the list of the last 10 years, our country ranks in the middle, leaving behind Serbia and Kosovo, while maintaining similar figures to North Macedonia.
Even in terms of the number of fires, with 1,037 cases in total, Albania ranks significantly below Bosnia with 1,549 fires, proving that, although the challenge exists, we are not among the most affected countries in the region.
The year 2025 has brought 49,486 hectares of burned land to our country, a high figure, but not the highest in years. In historical retrospect, Albania has had even more difficult years than this, such as 2007, when over 127 thousand hectares were burned, or 2011 and 2012, with over 53 thousand hectares each. This shows that fire cycles have large fluctuations, often influenced by climatic conditions and forest management practices.
In the region, Bosnia has lost the most this year, hitting 25,298 ha, while Montenegro has lost about 17,752 ha, followed by North Macedonia with 25,711 ha, Serbia with 20,778 ha and Kosovo with 8,820 ha. These data prove that this is a common regional challenge.
Data for Albania over the years shows that the region most affected by fires is Vlora, followed by Shkodra, Kukës and Gjirokastra. Meanwhile, in Kosovo, the most affected areas are Prizren and Prishtina.
With over 21 m² of forest lost for every inhabitant, the recovery challenge remains real, but the experience of past years shows that good management and regional cooperation can make a difference.
