Production of environmental materials increases - INSTAT: 20.5 million tons were

Raw materials extracted from domestic natural resources increased by 1.3% in 2023, compared to 1 year earlier, reaching 20.5 million tons. The Institute of Statistics has published the Environmental Material Flow Accounts for 2023, with the total amount of materials used directly in the economy, including biomass, metallic and non-metallic minerals, and fossil energy materials.

According to data from INSTAT, non-metallic minerals account for 53% of the total, followed by biomass with 33%. Biomass includes non-fossil organic materials of biological origin and, according to the definitions of Environmental Material Flow Accounts, is the raw material extracted from all agricultural products, fish and game animals.

Meanwhile, 8% of the structure of domestic natural resources is taken up by metallic minerals and 6% by fossil energy materials, such as oil resources.

In particular, INSTAT reports that imports of environmental materials in 2023 reached a value of about 5.5 million tons, or 8.19% more than in 2022. The greatest impact on this growth was provided by "minerals and metal concentrates" with an increase of 10.80% and "fossil energy materials" with 9.37%.

Meanwhile, exports of environmental materials in 2023 reached a value of around 4.2 million tons, experiencing an increase of 8.53% compared to 2022.

During 2023, dependence on imported materials was estimated at 21.1%, marking an increase of 1.1 percentage points compared to the previous year. During the period 2019 – 2023, dependence on imported materials has varied within the limits of 17.8% in 2019, up to 21.2% in 2023.

In 2023, fossil energy materials had the highest import dependence, at around 48.3%, followed by minerals and metal concentrates at 43.3%.
