Energy self-producers are increasing - ERE: 1,135 clients were added in 2025, 27.96% more than a year ago

The number of consumers who are producing their own electricity for their needs has continued to increase during 2025. Data published in the annual report of the Energy Regulatory Authority show that the Distribution System Operator has approved 1,135 applications for self-producer status this year, out of a total of 1,261 requests submitted.
According to ERE, this number represents an increase of 27.96% compared to 2024, bringing the total number of consumers who have received self-producer status in the country to 3,551.
The Law “On the Promotion of the Use of Energy from Renewable Sources” enables consumers to produce the energy they need for personal use, mainly from solar and wind sources, with the aim of reducing monthly bill costs and increasing energy independence. According to the regulatory framework in force, consumers who receive this status can install capacities of up to 500 kW to cover their needs, while excess energy can be injected into the distribution network.
Data show that the majority of self-producers are private entities, with about 67% of the total, while 31% are household consumers. Only about 2% belong to the budgetary and non-budgetary category.
According to the distribution by category, by the end of 2025 there will be 2,377 non-family self-producers, 1,089 family producers, 69 public institutions, such as municipalities, ministries or educational institutions, as well as 16 non-budgetary institutions, including water supply, polyclinics and health centers.
