Around 830 million euros in financing for Albania - EIB, more investments in transport. Focus on the rehabilitation of railways

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has financed a total of around 830 million euros for Albania by the end of last year. According to official data from this bank, the majority of the financing, or around 60% of the total, has gone to the transport sector in Albania. This sector has already absorbed 474.5 million euros.
Meanwhile, the two most important financings have been for the rehabilitation of railways. Thus, in April last year, an agreement was signed for the financing of 90 million euros for the rehabilitation of the Durrës-Rrogozhinë railway line, part of Corridor VIII. Of the total, 60.5 million euros are grants, while 30 million are soft loans.
About two years ago, in March 2024, the European Investment Bank granted Albania a loan of 100 million euros for the rehabilitation of the Vorë-Hani i Hotit railway.
Energy is the second most financed sector by this bank with a total fund of 188.9 million euros, where the loan for the trans-Adriatic gas pipeline of 105 million euros stands out. Water supply and sewage have benefited from 110.1 million euros, credit lines with 30 million, education 12.5 million, urban development 7.3 million and the services sector 4.5 million euros.
The European Investment Bank, owned by the 27 EU governments and one of the largest investors and creditors globally, raises significant funds from capital markets, which it then lends at favourable rates to projects that meet its criteria. The EIB has been providing financing in Albania through loans since 1995. Last year, the bank opened a representative office in Tirana.
