"Rapid reassessment of drug prices" - Sala: We avoid the risk of

The Council of Ministers today approved several changes to the decision "On the establishment and functioning of the Medicines Pricing Commission".

In a statement to the media after the government meeting, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Evis Sala, said that with the approval of these changes, a very important step was taken to guarantee more transparency, stability and security in the pharmaceutical market in Albania.

"This decision comes as a response to an early need to improve the methodology for determining drug prices and speed up procedures and guarantee a sustainable supply of drugs for citizens," said Sala.

Minister Sala emphasized that "the approved changes aim at several very important points; firstly, guaranteeing the availability of medicines on the market by avoiding the risk of shortages, especially for medicines that are the only alternatives on the reimbursement list or for hospital use, increasing transparency and professionalism in the price-setting process through a clearer and more stable methodology, which keeps prices under control, but at the same time creates opportunities for the absorption of new and innovative medicines in the Albanian market."

Also, continued Sala, it brings about the acceleration of deadlines and the simplification of procedures, including the use of electronic documentation in accordance with the digitalization process of the administration.

Sala stated that "in the interest of transparency, a special provision has been provided for 2026, which gives the Drug Pricing Commission the opportunity to reassess prices within a short period of time in order to avoid any risk of withdrawing drugs from the market."

According to her, the changes are not aimed at increasing the price of medicines, but rather at ensuring their sustainability, better access for patients, and a safer and more predictable pharmaceutical market.

"The priority of the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs remains unchanged to ensure that every patient in Albania has access to the medicines they need at the right time with guaranteed quality standards," said Sala.
